Mark Wright

0Mark Wright

Mark, started his career at Oxford United and signed professional forms in the 1980/81 season, after only 11 appearances he was bought by Southampton as he had caught the eye. Wright played along side Kevin Keegan and impressed as a player, he was called up to the England squad by Bobby Robson who was looking for a long term replacement for Terry Butcher.

After 222 appearances for the Saints in which he scored 11 goals, Wright signed for Derby County, on 8 August 1987. After 171 games for Derby as Captain he was then spotted by Graeme Souness.

Mark signed for Liverpool along with his Derby team mate Dean Saunders and made his debut for Liverpool on 17th August in a 2-1 win over Oldham at Anfield. Mark made 210 appearances for Liverpool and because of injury retired on 1st August 1998 at the age of 35.

Mark collected 45 caps for England and would have got more if it hadn’t been for injury before Euro 92. Mark was one of eleven players voted for in team of the tournament by all the team managers in the 1990 World Cup.

Mark has managed various clubs since finishing football and bowed out with Chester City last season with no funds being made available to build on a depleted squad.

Marks stories from his playing days are hilarious, a straight talker who says it like it is, Mark is happy to take questions from the audience and can quite happily give a 40 minute speech.
